Our office is a mercury-free practice, and we always use aesthetic tooth-colored fillings (composite resin restorations) to restore teeth destroyed by tooth decay and wear. A tooth-colored filling is a mixture of tooth-colored resin and clear glass particles to give it strength. Many people still have silver/mercury (amalgam) fillings in their mouths from years past. Amalgam fillings over time, can corrode, break down, and leak around the edges. They are almost always larger fillings by design, resulting in a weaker tooth structure. Although no proven health risks for amalgam fillings exist, controversy has surrounded the fact that they contain mercury, which is a heavy metal. We can safely remove these amalgam fillings and replace them with composite resin fillings that match your tooth structure, so that they are virtually unnoticeable.
Depending on the amount of tooth structure damaged by tooth decay and/or wear, it may be necessary to restore teeth with porcelain restorations. Sometimes the amount of tooth damage is too large for a regulatr filling to hold. In this case, we can restore these teeth with beautiful and strong porcelain fillings (inlays and onlays) or porcelain crowns, which cover and protect the entire tooth. Crowns improve the strength, function, and appearance of a broken down tooth that otherwise would be lost. All of these durable and esthetic restorations are custom-made and designed to fit and match your teeth by our expert dental laboratories. As opposed to Composite Resin Fillings, which can be done in one office visit, porcelain inlays, onlays, and crown are usually completed in 2 visits. The first visit is for preparation and impression of your tooth, with placement of a temporary restoration. At the second visit, we try in the permanent porcelain restoration, verify esthetics and fit, and permanently cement.
Porcelain veneers are thin shells of ceramic that cover teeth to close gaps and eliminate imperfections. If you have stained, chipped, or misshapen teeth and want a custom designed solution to restore your smile, porcelain veneers may be right for you. Porcelain veneers are made of very fine porcelain that is translucent and reflects light like natural tooth enamel. Veneers are the most conservative porcelain restoration, as only minimal tooth structure is removed. They are highly resistant to stains from beverages and food. Our staff and doctors will need to complete a proper assessment of you teeth and bite to see if you are a good candidate for veneers.
